The Great Salbyk Mound is the biggest archaeological monument in Khakassia. It was named after Salbykskaya basin. This stone pyramid 20 m in height is a burial place of one of the most powerful Dinglin kings and his family. There are vertical stone plates situated around the burial mound. Their weight varies from 20 to 60 tons, the height is 8 meters. The legend says that this is "a road of spirits", which lead the souls of dead people to the dawn, into the upper "sky" world. Inside the burial mound there is a tomb with a mummy. Dinglin people as well as the Egyptians embalmed their kings. The tomb is made in the shape of a pyramid with a truncated top. The tomb is made of a larch tree with a thick layer of birch bark inside.
You can see two separate stones standing on a small mountain ridge from Salbyksky burial mound. They are famous for their magical power. A lot of people come here to restore their health. Shamans come here to renew their energy.
The Great Salbyk mound can be compared to the famous Stonehenge, but it surpasses Stonehenge if we talk about work time and force spent on the burial mound. Its archaeological dig was carried out in 1954-1956 by Professor S.V. Kiselev. It became known during the excavations that the quarries where the stones were taken from were situated 50 km far from the mound. It is still a secret how these large and heavy stones were transported to the place where they are now.
The burial mound was plundered before archaeologists started their work there. In 2008 the museum "The ancient burial mounds of Salbyk steppe" was opened here. Experienced guides make interesting excursions. There are toilets and dustbins situated on the territory of the museum.
