Taymyr Regional Museum

The Taymyr Regional Museum was founded in 1937. In 2007 to celebrate 70-anniversary a new building was built to move the museum. The building allows establishing the northernmost modern culture-historical center.

Museum collections (since 1937) allow it to move to the higher level of development, because it has more than 74 thousand exhibits (40 thousand of them are original documents and photos) concerning the history, life of low-numbered people of the North, flora and fauna of Taymyr, local crafts and production. Every year the staff of the museum adds about 2 thousands exhibits to the collection. Based on the collection holdings, there is a scientific research conducted in Taymyr District Regional Museum, literally they write a history of Taymyr without any literature sources about the history of the region. More than 10 thousands people visit the museum every year. Every day the museum workers give consultations about the history, nature and culture for different institutions, mass media and also they organize some travelling exhibitions.

Ethnographic collections are the honor of the museum, they characterize everyday life and culture of indigenous groups of Taymyr people – nganasans, enets people, nenets people, dolgans and evenk people.

Such indigenous groups are called “low-numbered” people, because some of such ethic groups can easily be accommodated in 1 two-storey building. Canvas made of old deer coats tells about peculiar people – dolgans, they never cry at the funeral, never express joy when see a friend and see 86 tones of white color.

Items of nganasan’s (the oldest ethnic group of Taymyr) shamanism make a very precious part of the collection. The most interesting are the collections of idols, mascots, shaman’s dresses which are unique. These collections can help to answer the question about Taymyr Christianization and in particular about the role of merchants in this process.
