The museum has a long and difficult story of establishing. It started in 1939 from a large basement room of the barrack on one of the first streets of Norilsk. It used to be serviced by secret police and was a closed-door establishment until 1948. In 2000 the museum moved to a new building on Leninsky prospect and opened an exhibition “Norilsk time” which was telling about true history of the city starting from the first subarctic town in Siberia to today’s advanced industrial metropolis. Among exhibits there were 18 th century sundial of Taymyr peninsula discoverers, a model of the first drilling platform in Talnakh, a model of 11 th century koch (boat) of etc.
Among 45 thousand exhibits and collections there is a fund of N. Urvantsev - the discoverer of Norilsk, funds of Norillag history, a collection of rare books, a collection of minerals, paleontological collection, archeological collection, a collection of arts works and material culture items of Taymyr aborigines.
There is also an exhibition project called “Sympathy is a real policy” which coincided with 80 th anniversary of the day, when Nansen won a Noble Peace Prize. There visitors can see pictures taken by Nansen, originals of which are exhibited in Norway National Library (Oslo). The northernmost museum in Russia is not just an exhibition hall, but an institution which leads a massive public awareness campaign. Interesting lectures, experiments in a field of teaching arts to children and scientific library are very interesting thanks to the museum staff.
Norilsk Art Gallery proves the fact that severe climate conditions can not stop people from being into high art. Starting from 1974, 5000-exhibits collection represents different styles and trends of fine art, genres and techniques of art in the second half of 20 th century.
The gallery has unique exotic landscapes and severe days of northerners depicted on the paintings of Taymyr, engravings and linoleum engravings of N. Laptukov, N. Batulu, M. Porotov, B. Molchanov (pieces of art made by him of leather and deer skin are really unique).

Walking along Norilsk streets with Saint-Petersburg-style arches and romantic alleys it is hard to imagine, that the city has started from a simple wooden house, which was built by the second expedition of N. Urvantsev – discoverer of Norilsk ore district and Severnaya Zemlya archipelago. He was amazed by the beauty of Siberia and devoted his life to this region. “Columbus of the North” – such name was given to him for reclaiming severe Siberian North.
The Second expedition consisted of 59 people and worked in 1921-1922. During this period of time a map of Norilsk region has been specified, Pyasina river navigability has been studied. Meteorological observations showed that it is possible conduct works in winter.
The house of Urvantsev was built by geologists in winter of 1921and preserved until present days. It used to be a part of a big historical complex (destroyed in 1990). Then it was moved to the center of the city polished with special fire-protective reagent, made coldproof and painted. There are a lot of items belonged to geologists and the family of Urvantsev, that were left to the museum after their death.
On the basis of “The first house of Norilsk” museum research workers apart from regular excursions also conduct interactive lessons for kids on how to build a house, during which they tell about techniques of Russian architectonics by the example of wooden hut.
