Severobaikals was founded in 1974. It was build on Baikal-Amur Mainline for constructors of Buryat section of the railroad. This sector was called “Novogodny”. In several years in has grown into large transport hub with a massive construction complex and developed infrastructure. In 1980 it was declared a city of Republic significance. Now there is a museum of “The History of Baikal_amur mainline” to remind about the great construction of those years.

There are no industrial undertakings in town and a department of the East Siberian Railway is the most significant among town’s agencies. In terms of touristic potential, Severobaikalsk is interesting by its location. It is situated in the northernmost part of the Lake Baikal. From 3 sides of the town there are branches of Baikal ridge, from the forth – there is a vast expanse of the Lake. The water is so clean here that people drink straight from the lake. In summer near Yarki island the water warms-up to 24°C so a lot of people swim and sale here. Slyudyanskie lakes (Bolshoye and Maloye)are also very good for swimming – great beach, warm water, pine forest make this place the best for Severobaikalsk citizens to spend their leisure.

In winter Severobaikals is great place for those who like skiing. There is a piste near the city. Thermal springs Goujekit and Dzelinda are also very popular in winter, because there people can not only spend their vacation but also to improve their health. Those who love fishing can visit Baikalskoye village (40 km away from Severobaikalsk). It is an old fisherman’s village, situated on a high shore of Lake Baikal.

Around the town you can see amazing things. High-mountain lake Frolikha is of a glacial origin. There are also a Turaly “singing” valley and islands where famous Baikal seals – narpas live.

Severobaikalsk has a developed infrastructure. There are a lot of diners and hotels. But the main thing here is that Severobaikalsk people are friendly, kind, open-hearted Siberians.
