In Buryat language its name is Narin Dalai which means “narrow sea”. The Small Sea is a part of Lake Baikal, separated by the Olkhon Island. It has a form of a strait which extends from the south-west to the north-east; its length is 76km, maximum width – 17km, minimum width – 4km, maximum depth – 200m. It is one of the largest shallow parts of the lake which is rich with fish.
Climate of the Small Sea is favourable for rest. In summer water temperature in the shallow bays with sandy bottom is +19, +21°С. A large number of picturesque bays and islands, warm water and convenient place for fishing here attract tourists more than other parts of Baikal Lake do. Along the shore of the Small Sea you can travel by car, by bike, by horse or on foot.
The Small Sea is a shallow well-warmed strait between the ancient island of Olkhon and the west coast of Lake Baikal.
The swimming season here ends later than usual and the number of sunny days (due to the peculiar movement of the air masses) is bigger than in other places of Baikal.
It is nice here in any season: winter and especially spring – a paradise for those who love ice fishing. In July and August the temperature of the crystal clear water of the bay is 23°С. Indian summer is peaceful and quiet: the water is warm enough for swimming and there is a lot of mushrooms and berries.
Warm bays and harbours, ancient rocks and sandy beaches, as well as unique flora of the Tazheran steppes create the atmosphere of the detachment from the civilization and leave an indelible impression for a whole life!
