Abakan city tour with visiting Khakassian National Regional Museum

Duration: 3 hours, season: all year around, exc. Monday (day-off in the museum)

This excursion will give you a lot of knowledge about historical details of Abakan, its foundation and the most interesting legends. Moreover, you will visit the Khakassian National Regional museum with its outstanding ethnographic collections, including clothes, ornamentation and trappings of indigenous population and shamans. Khakassia will open you its mysteries showing a real Khakassian yurt and real shaman’s costume.

After city tour you will visit the Siberian unique landscaping park Garden of the dream. The park has so many unexpected and interesting things: the Eiffel Tower, the evil claws and beak of an huge eagle, unsightly mounds near the grass are funny hedgehog, an English lawn, meditation in a Japanese garden, and the most impressing thing is many Siberian amazing plants, pergolas, swings, funny little creatures, sitting at the edges of walkways and much more.

Trip to Minussinsk town

Duration: 4 hours, season: all year around. Distance: 25 km far from Abakan one way.

Minussinsk is a city-memorial of ancient architecture. The Savior Cathedral, old printing establishment, old wooden houses. Every street is marked by a historic event, it is especially noticeable in the old part of the city - green and clean one, with wooden window shutters and gates of houses in old merchant style. The Regional Martyanov Museum draws attention of tourists all over the world. Nikolai Martyanov, the founder of local law in Siberia as a science in museums, he is the man who was able to unite the community for a good purpose, for future generations. In 1937, participants of a special tour during the International Geological Congress, visiting Minussinsk museum, wrote in the guest book: "Minussinsk museum can do honor to the capital of any European state". Museum boasts its collections of more than 150 thousand samples which will touch your inner world and make you think over. 

During the excursion you will have a walk around the city centre and visit a local market where you will have an opportunity to buy famous Minusinsk tomatoes. Minussinsk tomatoes started to be grown in the 19th century. Many local residents still use seed varieties, which fell to them by inheritance from grandparents. The largest tomato weighing nearly 2 kg, raised a local man in 2010.

This little Siberian town will remain in your memory for a long time!

Tour to the Khakassian reserve

to the mountain group Oglahty

Duration: 6 hours, season: May-September. Distance: 48 km far from Abakan one way.

We are going to the north from Abakan, to Krasnoyarsk water reservoir, to the bank of Yenisei river.

Ecological and excursion complex Oglahty (khak. Oglah tag - Goat Mountain) is part of the Khakassian nature reserve, it’s located in a picturesque place near the confluence of the Yenisei and Tuba River.

The excursion starts in the visitor center of the reserve, where guests will hear about the most vivid events of Khakassian ancient history, styles of local rock painting and the unique archaeological discoveries made on the territory of Oglahty mountain range.

The highlight of the tour will be the rise of the hill Forty Teeth up 967 wooden steps (altitude difference 150 m). The long, but not difficult ascent will reward you with stunning views of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir, which open from the viewing platforms on the way. On the top you will also see the ancient rock art (petroglyphs) of age from 6000 to 1000 years.

Oglakhty is called a stone chronicle of the ancient history of Khakassia.

Water tour along the river Yenisei

to the Krasnoyarsk reservoir

Duration: 5 hrs, season: May-September. Distance: 40 km far from Abakan one way.

The meeting and end point of the tour: the river port in Abakan.

From Abakan you will travel along the great Yenisei river. During the trip by a speedboat guests will see the confluence of the Yenisei and Abakan River, the beginning of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir and the marvelous nature of Khakassia. The highlight of the tour will be the unique flooded petroglyphs, the oldest of them belong to 3 millennium BC. Currently, after the formation of the reservoir people can reach and see them only from the water side. The reserved status in the area of the mountain massif Oglahty saves petroglyphs from vandalism.

Besides, during the tour you will go to the visit center of the Khakassian nature reserve and rise the hill Forty Teeth up 967 wooden steps.

Return to Abakan up stream.

Please note, the realization of the tour depends on meteorological conditions on the river. Even a slight wind in the open water area cannot afford to get to the final destination.

Trip to the Great Salbyk Mound

Duration: 4 hrs, season: June-September. Distance: 75 km far from Abakan one way.

Salbyk Mound is situated in the Valley of the Kings that combined more than 10 “king” mounds and more than 100 ordinary mounds. The greatest archeological monument is Great Salbyk Mound constructed in 4 century B.C. over the grave of Dinlin Tsar and his family. It’s about 0,5 km by perimeter and over 11,5 meters high. The vertical stones weigh 60 tons. It’s often called Russian Stonehenge. In that very place the local shamans derive their strength, that’s why this excursion will definitely become a journey through time and spaces.

Archeological tour to the Valley of Kings

Duration: 8 hrs, season: June-September. Distance: 130 km far from Abakan one way.

We offer you to visit the place of archaeological dig – the Valley of Kings. There are more than 50 big burial mounds of tagarsk tribes kings. Firstly, a visit to Barsuchiy Log where a burial mound of 4-5 centuries B.C. was found several years ago.

The main part of the excursion – a visit to Great Salbyk Mound (5-4 centuries B.C.). Great Salbyk Mound is a pyramid of 30 meters high that was constructed over the grave of a noble family of Din Ling. This mound is the evidence of the tagarsk state power. There are stone plates near every mound which is usual for such a big mounds. Their weight is about 20-60 tons. The legend says that this is “the road of spirits” which leads the dead souls through the mountains to the upper world.

Then the tourists will visit Uglukol lake and one more burial mound. It is named Uybatsky chaatas (burial ground of 7-8 centuries B.C.). There archaeologists have found masks made from terracotta, wooden sculptures and many other objects.

Trip to Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydro Power Station

Duration: 4 hrs, season: all year around. Distance: 120 km far from Abakan one way.

Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydro Power station is an energetic heart of Khakassia. Its energy fills up not only homes and factories but people’s hearts. It’s really huge and its height is 242 meters while its length is 1072 meters. Visiting this place is the perfect way to enjoy magnificent view and “recharge your batteries”! Please note, no entrance to the power station is allowed, only outside view from the viewing platform is possible. 

There is a trout farm that you are going to visit and also have an opportunity to buy fish.

A visit to the Sizaya village which is a mother land of a famous Olympic champion, wrestler Ivan Yarygin, where a small museum is created to his memory.

Trip to Shushenskoye village

Duration: 8 hrs, season: all year around. Distance: 80 km far from Abakan one way.

The history of Shushenskoye village begins from the time when a Cossack's stockaded town was founded in the 18th century. At that time there were 35 houses and a good church in Shushenskoye. In the 19th century the village turned into a centre of the district and a place for exile of many famous people including the Decembrists. Due to its convenient location, mild climate and a constant inflow of educated people, Shushenskoye soon became the leading centre. By the end of the 19th century it became a village of well-to-do peasants and merchants. Craftsmen, carpenters, potters and agrarian workshops worked in the village.

You will visit a unique State Ethnographical Museum reserve Shushenskoye, where you will learn about the history of the village, its culture and people’s way of life. A lot of people go here attracted by ancient Siberian traditions, which are fully preserved in this place. You will visit a shop of a merchant, reach people’s houses, a prison and a bar. It is also possible to organize a visit to a real tavern, you can see handicrafts and a Cossack folk show. Here you will be served a cup of tea and traditional dishes in real Siberian izba.

A visit to a national park Shushenskiy pine forest, where you will see hut near Perovo lake. It is also possible to organize a tea-drinking.

The reserve Kazanovka was founded in February of 1996. Its territory is more than 18 thousand hectares. Monuments richness (more than 1,5 thousand of archaeological monuments) and landscape peculiarity, that includes neighboring forest and steppe zones, make this territory an unique one. Walking excursion around the reserve and possibility to look at the ancient Khakassian petroglyphs won’t let you forget this place. Kazanovka will let you touch the pictures on the stones that are more than 4 thousand years old, observe ancient fortresses, real Khakassian yurts and also try national cuisine if you wish. For an extra payment a folklore group can present you their performance.

Trip to the archaeological reserve Kazanovka

Duration: 10 hours, season: May-September. Distance: 170 km far from Abakan one way.

The history of Khakassia is very reach and has plenty of memorable dates.

The excursion to the museum-reserve Kazanovka will let you know more about the inheritance of ancient civilizations. This museum is situated under the open sky and includes mountains, canyons, caves, mixed forest, rare plants. There are more than 2000 archaeological monuments on the territory of the nature reserve. Every year archaeologists open 30-40 new monuments. The main purpose of this museum is to preserve natural and historical landscapes, reconstruction and development of local people's life, gathering, searching, forming and protection of the funds. In Kazanovka the tourists will have a chance to see rock paintings which are 3000-5000 years old. Archaeologists make copies of these paintings on paper for further studying and you can take these copies with you as souvenirs.

Visit to an ethnographical village Khakassian aal, where the tourists have a chance to get personally acquainted with everyday life of Khakassian people from the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

On the route the group makes a stop at a Khakassian village where there is a monument Khurtuyakh tas. Ulug Khurtuyakh tas means "a big stone old woman". It has a rough face, round stomach and breast. Khurtuyakh tas is a famous historical and cultural complex of Khakassia. The stone sculpture situated in the centre of Askiz burial mound, was made 4.5 thousand years ago. Nowadays the stele Khurtuyakh tas is a place of pilgrimage and is considered to be one of the most respected stone sculptures. Local women who wish to have a baby usually bring gifts to this monument.

Departure from Abakan to the west of Khakassia to the yurt camp Kyug (not far from Askiz village, wooden yurts). The camp is located on the bank of a small river Askiz between the Altai and Sayan mountains.

The excursion to the open-air archeological museum of Khakassia Kazanovka will let you know more about the inheritance of ancient civilizations. This museum is situated under the open sky and includes mountains, canyons, caves, mixed forest, rare plants. There are more than 2000 archaeological monuments on the territory of the nature reserve.

Hiking trip to the national park Ergaki

Duration: 12 hours, season: June-September. Distance: 235 km far from Abakan one way. 

We offer you to travel from Abakan to the West Sayan mountains. You will see the host of this territory - Sleeping Sayan warrior if you look attentively at the contours of the mountain. The legend says that one day the Khakassian warrior Sayan fell asleep here. He can be seen now lying on the back with folded arms.

In June now here, now there you can see globeflowers, flowers of a bright orange colour, which are so fond of Siberians.

Old people thought that behind these mountains the World Edge is situated. Edge or not, but the scenery is stunning; the eye cannot be fed from the windows of the bus. 

The territory of the natural park Ergaki is a traditional tourist center in the south of the region and the most visited part of the West Sayan mountains. Ergaki is for sure a pearl of Siberia. The lovers of pristine wild nature should definitely visit this amazing corner of the world. We will make a simple hiking tour (for 4-5 hrs) to the rock Hanging Stone that seems to be falling every minute. Picnic on the way.

During this day the group will also get acquainted with a Siberian village. The name of the place is Tanzybei. The group will visit a local family; taste home cooked cookies and beverages, fruit and vegetables from the garden. Here you can see chickens and rabbits, have a natural milk, see the Siberian garden. Dinner at the farmhouse will surprise you with its variety of dishes.

Excursion to Vissarion eco-village

Duration: 7 hours, season: all year around. Distance: 190 km far from Abakan one way.

Departure from Abakan to Petropavlovka village, tour to the Vissarion eco-village.

The centre of Siberia. The south of Krasnoyarsk region. Wonderful places where the Eastern Sayans blend with the taiga. The Land of Siberia… hidden, mysterious, unknown, it seems like it has been protected by some special force of destiny. Ancient legend says that here, long ago, the first people lived, who called themselves Aries. In the course of time they spread out all over the Earth to give birth of the Human race. But at the end of time they are predestined by the Great God to come back here to complete the plan of the Most High. A wonderful happy life is being born on the laws of Harmony, Love, Goodness. It is amazing and precious that people, gathered from almost all the world, are learning to understand each other, to devote themselves to the others in a spirit of peace and joy.

Visit vine weaving, pottery, root furniture workrooms, you will hear the story about the secrets of crafts and see some workshops. After that departure to Gulyaevka village, visit to a weaving, arts and other crafts workshops and local chapel. Communication with locals, walking, free time.

Lunch in the local family in Petropavlovka (vegetarian). Return to Abakan.

Trip to archeological site Sunduki

Duration: 8 hours, season: May-September. Distance: 230 km far from Abakan one way.

Mysterious Chests (in Russian “Sunduki”) is a mountain range in the area of the famous salt lake Shira. Unusual outliers on the mountain tops and extraordinary mountain used, according to the archaeologists, to observe the stars. It may be the ancient observatory - Siberian Stonehenge. But Chests is not just an observatory, it’s a kind of churches associated with petroglyphs. Strong stones made it possible to preserve the marks of ancestors relative untouched, we need only to be able to read these signs, as they are read by experienced trackers.
