Legendary Chuysky Trakt (the route M52), which spreads from the Novosibirsk region through the Altai Territory and the Republic of Altai to the border with Mongolia, is one of the most beautiful roads in the world. According to the Federal Road Transport Agency, it is planned to turn this route into museum for its 100th anniversary. Along the road there will be about 20 image and cultural areas that will change the whole route into the museum.
This year the first three sites are available for tourists in the territory of Altai Krai. In Republic Altai the first object is going to appear till 3rd July in the next year. It will be created in the territory of 428 km from Chuysky Trakt at the entrance to the region. There will be reconstructed tourist area, stands with a history of the route and information about it.
These objects will appear on the road every year, but yet it is impossible to specify exact number or location because its development and coordination are in the process.
The sense of the project is that the road becomes a kind of museum: each area is unique and information enlarges from stand to stand. It includes information about the history, current state, prospects of development of Chuyski tract and famous personalities of art and culture of Altai in Russian and English languages. Colorful maps of the road with marking of iconic places are represented for drivers and travelers. As planned, tourists, who travel along the Chuysky Trakt and make stops on the road service facilities, will be able to immerse themselves in the history of the road and to expand their knowledge about Altai.
Chuysky Trakt is ranked fifth out of ten in the rating of the most beautiful roads in the world by the international magazine “National Geographic”. However, this route is not only one of the most beautiful roads, but also one of the most ancient roads in Russia, which is filled with history, keeps all the epochs and occupies a unique area with a rich heritage and unique culture.
It should be remembered that in the Altai Republic on the road there is a monument to the legendary Kolka Snegirev - it is dedicated to the builders of the road, and all the drivers that have ever passed by these places. On May 26, 1922 the edict of the Soviet government was issued, under which Chuysky Trakt, former usual long bridle-path, received the status of state road.
The first images of the Chuysky tract belong to the end of 17th- beginning of 18th century, when by decree of Peter I Bikatunskaya fort was built at the confluence of the rivers Biya and Katun. Then there was a track that led to the famous Vihorevsky passage. Many historians believe that ancient Chuysky Trakt is the northern branch of the Silk Road, the existence of such road mentioned in Chinese sources dated three thousand years ago.
