Rocks in the nature reserve Stolby were 50 million years older than previously thought.

03.09.2019

Scientists of the Siberian Federal University have determined that the age of volcanic rocks in the Krasnoyarsk  Nature Reserve "Stolby" is 430-450 million years, which is 50 million more than previously thought.

Until recently, it was assumed that the rocks were formed about 390 million years ago. With this stage of volcanic activity is associated, in particular, the formation of rocks in the southern part of the region and the formation of the largest deposits of aluminum ores in Khakassia; the largest amount of geological and geochemical information was accumulated precisely for this period. But recently, scientists from the Department of Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography of Siberian Federal University have come to a different conclusion: a significant part of the rocks of volcanic origin in the Krasnoyarsk Territory has an older Late Ordovician-Early Silurian age (430-450 million years).

Now scientists continue to study the history of volcanism in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia.

Besides the fact that they have to separate magmatic formations of different stages from each other and establish their specifics, research will probably help in the search for new deposits of aluminum and molybdenum ores.
