Shagaa is a new year according to the lunar calendar, one of the biggest holidays in the Tuvan calendar. New Year begins with the white month on the lunar calendar (it is the end of January-February according to the European calendar). The date of the holiday is defined by lamas. New Year comes not at midnight, but with the sunrise on the first New Year's Day. In 2017 the first day of the New Year according to the lunar calendar falls on February 27.

Mass events are held, such as: the "Sun" rite and meeting the first sun rays of the New Year, holding national traditional games (kazyk, tevek, khuresh fighting, raising the stone).
