On 16th of September a photo exhibition of the world famous wildlife photographer Sergei Gorshkov “Waterfalls of the Putorana plateau” was opened on Tsvetnoy Boulevard. The project "Wild World of the Putorana Plateau" is held with support of the Russian Geographical Society. The exhibition will run until October 16th, anyone can visit it for free, photographs are located on the Tsvetnoy Boulevard across the Circus.
Unique photos, transmitting power and beauty of one of the most beautiful places in Russia – the Putorana Plateau can be seen by everyone in the open air.
Putorana Plateau is located in the northwest of the Krasnoyarsk Krai. It is called as the land of ten thousand lakes and thousands of waterfalls. In fact, as Sergei Gorshkov told, there are more than 20 thousand waterfalls.
"How did it all start? In 2010, I have lived for a long time in the helicopter on Wrangel Island and found a journal in which there was an article with pictures of the Putorana plateau. I read it ten times. And then, when I were returning home - it was in the beginning of October,- I looked in the window of the aircraft, and in front of me a huge plateau opened: snow-capped peaks, cut by deep canyons. And I thought, "What a beautiful place!" - shared the photographer.
So it was the idea to make a series of pictures of one of the most beautiful and harsh places on Earth. First, the photographer wanted to implement this project on their own, but soon realized that it cannot be done alone: remote place, expensive flights, challenging shooting ... In 2014, Sergei Gorshkov has received a grant from the Russian Geographical Society, and his dream came true.
"As soon as I received the grant, the next day I flew on a plateau Putorana and began my project," - says Sergey.
According to the photographer, "Waterfalls of the Putorana Plateau" - is the most difficult project in the last 15 years. For three years Sergei Gorshkov was working on the territory of Putorana, the Grand Arctic and the Taimyr national parks, trying to catch a rare beautiful moment of the overthrow of the waterfalls.
"Everyone thinks that waterfalls - are just falling water. But it is not so, - said Sergey Gorshkov. - I told the story of some of the waterfalls, taking them from one point at different times of the year: here it is affluent in summer, in autumn - very little water, in winter - a block of ice ... So in the photos - the life story of each waterfall which I selected. "
Sergei Gorshkov has chosen 10 waterfalls, to which he often returned during three years.
Winter on Putorana begins in September and ends in June. Summer is conditional, and frosts are so strong that rivers freeze to the bottom, and lakes - to a depth of two meters. Despite the harsh conditions, the plateau is inhabited by animals. For example, the reindeer. "I decided to show the Putorana Plateau through the eyes of migrating deer. I followed them, shooting them. I went all the way of the migration of reindeer and went back to the plateau," - said the photographer.
According to him, there is a whole photostory. In autumn, Sergey Gorshkov is planning to publish a photo album with the support of the Russian Geographical Society.
As adviser of the President of the Russian Geographical Society for Information Policy Anastasia Chernobrovina noted at the opening ceremony of the exhibition "Waterfalls of the Putorana Plateau "Russia - so huge and hard to reach, that the country fully opens only to the most persistent photographers. Because of the grant support of the Russian Geographical Society and not only, today we see these unique places which, unfortunately, cannot be visited by every resident of Russia. But precisely because of these photos, we can give an opportunity for all Russians and its guests to make sure how unique our country is ", - said Anastasia Chernobrovina.
