Khakassia

Holidays of Khakasian people, leading their traditions from ancient times, came to us full of legends, well-established customs and rituals. The relationship between man and nature, a very important component of  Khakasian ideology, underlies each of them.

One of the most famous festivals is Chyl pazy. This is Khakasian beginning of the year, the holiday honoring the cosmos, the sun, nature; cleaning holiday. Many nations of the East celebrated similar New Year.

A month after celebrating Chyl pazy Khakasian people worship Mother Earth, its light and cleansing. This tradition is called Chir Ine.

Taan-toy is a celebration of the first arrivals of birds - daws. Birds, inhabitants of the celestial world, regarded as deities, and therefore are very honored. It is believed that each bird has certain qualities and functions.

Khakasian farmers consider as the main holiday Uren Hurty, dedicated welfare seeding. Same harvest feast which is celebrated in autumn, after harvest, is called Urtun-toi. It is dedicated to the spirit of arable land in gratitude for a good harvest.

The most famous stock-raising celebration is Toon Pira. It is a festival first ayran (acidic beverage prepared from fermented cow's milk). A celebration of the last ayran called Airan solyndzy, it's performed at the after the preparing for the winter (first of all, firewood) and is dedicated farewell ceremony of sleeping nature.

There are many festivals dedicated to the revered symbols of Khakasian women.
Thus, there is a feast of the first thunder, the festival of worship Heaven, Mountain, Water, Fire, Sun, Pai Hazyn (feast of the Sacred Birch)...

Hurtuyah Ai is an autumn month of the elderly, a holiday honoring and thaksgiving the elderly.

Of the same traditions that have arisen in recent times, is very well known International Ecological and Ethnic Festival of Puppet Theatres "Cheer Chayaan". Festival began its history in 2003. The festival is held every two years and its main purpose is to present the art of puppetry through cultural traditions, history and ecology of the region.
