The white lion is not a distinct subspecies, but a special morph with a genetic condition, leucism, that causes paler colouration. These animals are very rare and there is only one city in Russia where you can find them besides Krasnoyarsk.

During ages white lion was considered to be an African legend. First observations of these unusual animals were published in the beginning of the 20th century and only in 1975 white lion’s whelps were found.

White lion individuals occasionally have been encountered in and around Kruger National Park and the adjacent Timbavati Private Game Reserve in eastern South Africa, but are more commonly found in captivity.

Scientists suppose that white lions come from the Ice age where they used white fur color for camouflage.
