Altai State Regional Museum of Local History is the oldest museum in Siberia. The initiators of foundation of the museum were engineer and inventor P.K. Frolov (1775-1839) and a doctor, researcher of Altai F.V. Gebler (1782-1850). These were they, who began to form historical, technical and natural-science collection of the museum.
In the museum you can visit numerous exhibition halls, which will tell you all the history of the region. The scientific meaning of these archeological, ethnographical and numismatic collections is quite important for the city. The documental holdings of the museum provide us with the most interesting facts from the history of Altai XVIII – XX century.
The building itself, which hosts the museum, is a monument of architecture, history and culture of the middle of XIX century.

The museum was opened in 1959. An important role in its formation played such outstanding and authoritative museums of Russia as the Hermitage, the Tretyakov’s Gallery and the Russian Museum. They together with museums of local history took part in formation of collections. Another part of its fund was purchased in private collections in painters’ studios.
Now you can admire rare icons and canvas of famous Russian museums such as Tropinin, Savrasov, Shishkin, Levitan and many others here thanks to common efforts.
The expositions of the museum demonstrate the best articles of visual and applied arts from all over the world. The museum was opened in 1989 on the basis of Literature and Art collections of the Altai Regional Local History Museum. It is situated in two-story brick mansion, which is the monument of architecture of XIX century.
Visiting the museum, you can get acquainted with unique collections, such as the private fund of writer Grebenshikov (Russian writer and author of more than 100 novels, who died in the USA), the fund of the painter Rerikh, the collection of playbills from the theatres of Barnaul of XIX – XX century and collection of handwritten books published in Russia before the 18th century.
The stuff of the museum will organize an excursion for you, in the framework of which you will be told about the musical life of Barnaul, legends and fairy tales of Altai peoples, literature heritage of V. M. Shukshin, life and creative work of G.D. Grebenshchikov and many other expositions.

The military - historical department of the Regional museum started its work in 1991 in a memorial building of the XX century. Its opening is connected with the creation of the Mourning hall, and a constant exposition in memory of the fellow countrymen who died in Afghanistan. On the 50th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War the exposition «In work and in fight», telling about Altaians’ heroism on fronts and the home front of the Great Patriotic War was created. All these expositions and also numerous exhibitions of the department are devoted to a Russian Soldier.
For you, the guides of the museum will conduct excursion considering various subjects: «The military-rear Barnaul”, «Russian Soldiers (the XXth century)», «Afghanistan - our memory and pain».

Art gallery Turina gora is a first private gallery in Barnaul. It was opened in 2002. Learing artists of Altai, Siberia, Russia and some foreign masters preset their works in chamber hall of the gallery.
The highlight of the gallery is that every exhibition is complimented with exclusive pottery made by Turina gora masters. Turina gora gallery offers excursions and presentations for visitors. All the time the gallery takes part in different events and campaigns like, for example, a modern art exhibition Fresh wind 2006, Tower 2007, 2006 Museum night,2007 Museum night.

One of the youngest museums in Barnaul is The City (2007). The museum aims to show the history of Barnaul through the fate of people who have made a great contribution to its development. The main exhibition is The History of Barnaul in the people of 18-21 centuries. In addition, the museum offers thematic lectures on the topics: Barnaul temple architecture late 18th-early 20th centuries; the development of education in Barnaul 18-20 centuries; the history of philanthropy in Barnaul at the end of 19- beg. 20 centuries; formation of medicine in Barnaul, etc.
The museum is housed in the former town hall, which was built in 1914-1916. The ground floor was meant for commercial purpose, it housed a department store trade house Yakovlev and Polyakov, on the first floor there was City Council and executive council. The building's architecture is eclectic. The abundance of small parts and elements of different shapes made it bright. Some decorative elements on the facade were whitened. The contrasting colors of white and red facades gave even more chic look. The building is crowned by a fine cone-shaped dome – such parts used in the construction of office buildings in many cities of Russia. The tower is the most interesting part of the composition.

Mountain Pharmacy is a unique historical and architectural monument of the 18 century. It’s the first brick building in Barnaul, which appeared in the Altai mining district during the time of existence of mining plants of Akinfiy Demidov. Pharmacy has played an important role in supplying the mining district hospitals with medicines and health products.
Mountain Pharmacy was the first pharmacy in the Altai region and one of the first in Siberia. Outstanding travelers and scientists lived here in different times: Peter Simon Pallas, Friedrich von Gebler, Carl Friedrich von Ledebour, Erik Laxman.
Mountain Pharmacy is the only concept museum of pharmacy in Russia, it is dedicated to the history of pharmacy in the Altai Region, the Altai pharmacists contribution to the development of Russian science. While on the ground floor guests are welcomed in the pharmacy trade hall, decorated in the style of the late 19th century, and "write prescriptions", on the floor above in the real pharmacy laboratory a "pharmacist” is fagging away the manufacture of medicinal potions.
In the museum you can get acquainted with the products of the leading enterprises of the "Altai biopharmaceutical cluster". The Mountain pharmacy offers also visiting the grocery of unique Altai food, where you can taste and buy the best varieties of the Altai honey, natural oil, products from maral antlers, desserts and drinks from the Altai sea buckthorn.
