Memorial House-Museum of Nicholas Roerich in the Altai

House-Museum of Nicholas Roerich in Verkhniy Uymon village is a monument of history and culture in the Altai mountains.

During the Asian expedition (1923-1928) the painter Nicholas Roerich stayed in the village of Verkhniy Uymon (the oldest settlement of the Altai mountains, 1796) from 7 to 19 August 1926, in the house of an Old Believer Varfolomey Atamanov. The aim of the expedition was the survey of inaccessible areas of Central Asia (Tibet, Mongolia, Altai, China etc.). Subsequently, the expedition entered the golden fund of world geographical discoveries. Nicholas Roerich also wrote here many chapters of the book "Community" about Living Ethics.

Later, in Soviet times, Varfolomey Atamanov was arrested; his country estate came to desolation.

The museum was opened after the reconstruction in 2001. The initiator and inspirer of the revival of the museum was the poet Natalia Spirina. Restoration of the estate was carried out on private donations. The permanent exhibitions are reproductions of paintings by Nicholas Roerich and an exhibition of photographs from the Asian expedition. The museum is recommended to visit to all lovers of mountains! The memorial House-Museum of Roerich in Verkhniy Uymon is a part of the Cultural Complex named after Roerich "The heritage of the Altai", which includes some other cultural organizations in Verkhniy Uymon village.

As a painter, Nicholas Roerich embodied in his paintings the past of the Altai and the faith to its bright future. As a scientist, he explored its natural wealth and predicted significant discoveries in the field of archeology, history and geology. As a humanist, he claimed the future cultural progress of the Altai.
