The location of the Kemerovo region is unique: it is situated near the continental center, on a joint of the Western and Eastern Siberia, almost equally spaced from eastern and western frontiers of the country, takes a median place between Moscow and Vladivostok. Here each fan of traveling will find rest to his or her taste.
The area has a second name: because most of its territory is occupied by the Kuznetsk basin with enormous coal reserves, the region is called Kuzbass.
Mountain Shoriya is called the Siberian Switzerland for its natural riches and beauty. It’s covered by a giant amphitheater of mountains: the Kuznetsk Alatau and northeastern Altai.
The Shorians are a small indigenous, ancient Turkic people of Kuzbass, whose homeland is the mountain Shoria. Its population today is not more than 14 000 people. The Shorians are known for its products of iron. Russian explorers called these people "Kuznetsk Tatars". Forging and steelmaking not only gave the names to many towns and cities in the area, such as the first fort "Kuznetsky", built by Russians, and the modern city of Novokuznetsk, but also determined the leading activity in all of the Kuzbass basin - mining industry and metal production.
In Mountain Shoria there is National Park of unique pristine flora and fauna. And there there is the open air ethnographic museum "Tazgol".
There are many health resorts in Kuzbass operated on the basis of mineral sources. Here you can not only have a rest, but also improve your health. Mountain Shoriya is also popular for mountain-skiing, trekking routes, rafting and horse riding. In general this region has all preconditions to become the tourist center of the international level due to the quality of recreational resources in this small territory. Mountain Shoriya surpasses the majority of recreational zones of Russia.
"The Business Card" of Mountain Shoria is alpine skiing tourism. Especially popular is the Green Mount (Mustag) located near the population center Sheregesh. The mountain range is the highest peak of the Shorsky ridge (1570 meters above the sea level), it’s a large granite massif, which stretches from the southwest to the northeast of more than 25 kilometers.
The high level of Green Mount trails is acknowledged by the international Federation of skiing and snowboarding. The recreation area is capable of receiving up to 1 million people a year. There are all necessary conditions for the development of tourism and ski sports: hotels of different levels, trails with a total length of 10 kilometers, cable cars. The angle of slope steepness ranges from 8 to 45 degrees, the snow cover lasts from November to May - all this makes Sheregesh favorable place for alpine skiing, snowboarding and competitions of international level.
Apart from wonderful slopes for skiing another trademark of Mountain Shoria is Yeti, which presumably lives near Azas cave. Local people who have seen it describe Yeti as: “That creature has a massive body, from a distance it looks like a kind of brown bear, it footprints have 5 toes, and its height is approximately 1,5 – 2 meters. It has fur of red-black color all over its body. It also can easily climb a tree”. The image of Yeti became so popular, that in Sheregesh village a monument to it has been established. In Tashtagol it is planned to open a special exhibition in local museum completely devoted to this amazing creature. It is true or not, but mysterious legend about relict humanoid successfully overlaps the tourist context of this amazing region.
Kuzbass in general is really good both for summer and for winter rest: rafting and excellent fishing, caves, helicopter routes, excursions to the chairlift. As the covering of springboards with an artificial material allows athletes to train even in summertime.
