National ceremonial holiday "Khololo" took place in Kamchatka

06.11.2015

November 4, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky held a traditional ritual celebration "Khololo". It's a day of seals, some kind of Thanksgiving day of local indigenous people, called Koryaks. Celebration was held on the shores of the lake in the center of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the ethnographic area "Visiting Kutkh."

Khololo is an old ceremony, consists of rites of thanksgiving, purification, offering to the sea, feeding seals. Festival takes place in late the autumn, when the Koryak people have some free time from hunting and fishing. Indigenous people thank the gods for successful hunting and fishing. The chief guest of the festival is the seal. Koryak people believe, that finding favour in the eyes of this marine animal, fishers can hope that it will return next summer and bring new "guests".

A young hunter should get the seal for the festival. The seal is purified by the sacred fire - Koryaks ask forgiveness for the murder. They respect to this animal, without seals the life in the winter would be very difficult - this is nutritious meat and fat, which can be used not only in food but also for lighting homes, as well for heating.

Guests of the festival saw the traditional ceremonies, the performance of national folk ensembles, tried Koryak national dishes.

Girls in national costumes gave the grass "Lowten", guests can take it on the "Tree of Fortune" with its wishes that may come true.

Under the roar of drums were held ceremonies offerings Gyrgolalyn (upper spirit), Ivinilyn (the saint patron of sea hunting) and Yavalken (outside spirit).

Guests were treated by tea from Kamchatka herbs, cakes, fish soup and shurpa.

Everyone could enjoy the festive clothing of indigenous people and buy souvenirs.

"Khololo" received the status of an official celebration of the Kamchatka Territory in 2010.
