Governments plan to start negotiations on the establishment of the railway network between Russia and Japan, according to the governor of the Sakhalin Region Alexander Horoshavin.
The project involves building a rail line, which will connect Sakhalin with the mainland, which has the length of about 580 km. As part of the project, there are also plans for modernization of the entire railway system of Sakhalin.
The project is expected to be part of a larger project, which involves the establisment of a new transport link between East and West, through the building of a bridge or a tunnel through the La Perouse Strait between Sakhalin and Hokkaido, which will have the length of about 42 km.
The cost of the Russian part of the project is $ 4.5 billion, of which $2 billion will be invested in building of the Sakhalin - Mainland rail line, with the remaining $2.5 billion planned for investment in the Sakhalin railway network.
