On the 8 th of August in 1959 a large stone was thrown in the water. There was an inscription on this stone which said "Yenisei, surrender to us!" That was the day when the left bank foundation trench began to be built.
Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station takes the second place among all hydroelectric power stations in Russia. Its power is 6000 megawatt. The new technology of high concrete dams' construction, temperature regulation of a dam, blocking a big river during severe winter and many other innovations of Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station allowed to build a safe construction which has become the energetic heart of Siberia.
The legendary construction consists of a gravitational concrete dam (length - 1000 m, height - 125 m) including a left bank dam, an overflow dam, a watching post and a right bank dam. In 1982 the hydroelectric power station was equipped with a ship lifter with an outer harbor and a low channel.
The dam has formed the Krasnoyarsk water basin. The area of a surface mirror is 2000 square kilometers.
In 1956 Divnogorsk town was built on the bank of Yenisei river as a town of the dam's constructors.
The dams are usually built for centuries. They cannot be destroyed or used for other purposes. But dams are similar to living organisms, they are prone to ageing and diseases caused by global environment changes. The Krasnoyarsk dam has already been used for 40 years. Every year the time for its condition check increases.
In 1976 the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station was awarded by the order of the Labor red flag for success in using unique equipment and achieving project power.
This railway bridge is the most unique railway bridge over Yenisei river (distance between bearings - 140 m). It seemed to be impossible for the constructors of the Transsiberian railway to manage with a powerful river. But the project of a Moscow professor Lavr Proskuryakov and organizing ability of Knorre engineer successfully solved this problem. On the 28 th of March in 1899 the first passenger train crossed the river. In 1900 the bridge was awarded by a gold medal and Grand Prix on the international exhibition in Paris for its originality and grandiosity. Later UNESCO scientists called this railway bridge "the height of human engineering thought". It is included in "The atlas of world wonders. The outstanding architectural constructions and monument of all people" alongside with the Kremlin and Petrodvorets (1991). The bridge is a real monument for constructors of the Transsiberian railway and is the main part of the way. At the beginning of the 21 st century the bridge was considered to be invalid according to 4 technical checks. In 2002 this unique construction was disassembled and changed for the new railway bridge.
The Trans-Siberian Railway is the result of great developing of Siberia and the Far East. It is one of the greatest railway in the world and the live, man-made monument which was devoted to the Russian spirit. It was laid by Alexander III and then it was completed by his son Nicholas II. The segment of the Krasnoyarsk railway is notable for its difficult relief: a lot of water barriers, mountain passes. Unstable and karstic rocks make additional difficulties during operation. In postwar 1965 the most difficult section was brought into operation: the way of courage Abakan-Tayshet. The discovers, heroes and prospectors of it Alexander Koshurnikov, Konstantin Stafato and Alexey Zhuravlev died during carrying out of research works in 1949.
There are symbol-moments for all builders of the heroic iron way in Krasnoyarsk. It is the first locomotive of the Siberian heavy engineering factory, which was created on the basis of the factory «Krasniy Profintern» from Oryol Oblast , which was evacuated during the years of the Great Patriotic War.
In 1943 Krasnoyarsk engine driver Vasiliy Amosovich Gertsik drove the first special train of twenty railcars with ammunition and supply of provisions for soldiers. In 1984 the locomotive «Sergo Ordzhonikidze» №17-1600 was restored as a historical monument and placed at the square near the Krasnoyarsk railway station, where it stayed twenty years. Due to the reconstruction of the railway station and the square near it, more convenient place for the monument was found near the west side of the station. The monument is well visible by passengers from the viaduct, platform and windows of passing trains.
The process of the heavy historical monument transfer is very interesting. 2 August 2004: the locomotive was turned through 90 degrees towards the station. Rails were laid to the locomotive, about 200m long. In the evening when the trolleybus traffic stopped, electricity cables were raised and the 84 ton giant slowly rolled on rails to a new place.
Nowadays people make appointments near the monument, a lot of events are held at the square near it, tourists are in a hurry to photograph the unique heroic locomotive.
The mission of the historical museum "The memorial of victory" is to keep the memory about heroic events for the future generations and to tell about courage of Russia defenders.
The museum was built to commemorate the 30 th anniversary of the Great Civil war Victory. The author of the museum's project is a famous Krasnoyarsk architect A. Demirhanov.Later a monument for war heroes and rear workers was installed near "The memorial of victory". It represents two bronze men: a soldier and a worker who hold a sword in their hands covered by vine as a symbol of life. An eternal fire was lit there on the day of the monument's opening. The first memorable watch was kept here in 1999. Since then 60 best cadets of "Patriot" center are on guard here annually. Every cadet of the center prepares to be on guard, but only the most disciplined and patient are allowed to keep the watch. The age of the cadets is 14-18 years.Cadets are on guard every day from 10.00 to 16.00 during May holidays. The guard is relieved every 15 minutes. On the 27 th of April in 2006 a unique book "The roads of victory" was presented to the public. The book includes remembrances of Krasnoyarsk people, front veterans and rear workers about the Great Civil war.The workers of the museum let the authors of the book study the documents, old publications and letters kept in its funds. The book is divided into 3 parts: "War is war", "Front and rear are brothers" and "Memory".The monument for the airborne troops was also installed on the territory of the museu
In 2007 the Krasnoyarsk Organ hall celebrated its 25 th anniversary. The laureate of international contests Andrey Bardin played compositions of the famous organist Dietrich Buxtehude of anniversary.
Originally the Organ hall was a Roman-Catholic church built in 1911. It was used by polish Catholics before the revolution.25 years ago the gothic building on Dekabristov street was restored and totally given to the wind concert organ made by the Czech company Rieger-Kloss.Garry Grodberg, the famous organist of Russia took part in the first concert in the Organ hall. Since then Krasnoyarsk people got a chance to enjoy a part of European culture and recalled their own history. The organ appeared in ancient Russia in X century due to close cultural and political relations with Byzantium. It can also be seen on the frescoes of Sofiysky cathedral in Kiev, on Moscow and Novgorod miniatures of XVI century.During the past 25 years world famous musicians made their performances here: Garry Grodberg, Ludger Lomann, Galina Kozlova, Evgenia Lisitsina, Vladimir Homyakov and many others. The Krasnoyarsk Organ hall is one of the cultural centers of the whole Siberian region.Since 1991 Krasnoyarsk Catholics make their services in the Organ hall. An unusual mass is held there on Christmas Eve. A lot of people come to the church from all over the region. Traditionally the youth of the Catholic community make a Christmas play.
Pokrovskaya church or Pokrovsky cathedral is the main orthodox church in Krasnoyarsk. It is not only the pearl of architectural inheritance, but also the witness of the city's history, the monument of thought and craft.
Pokrovskaya church was founded in 1785.Then it was closed before the war, opened again in 1943 and later closed in 1962.Some time ago there was an exhibition hall in the church. The surrounding territory was covered by litter. In 1978 the church was restored. It was painted red with green roof and domes. Its territory was also cleaned from litter.
That's how the church looked like for the past 25 years. The most ancient Krasnoyarsk temple is a one storey church where an altar, a temple, a refectory and a bell tower are situated on one axis. The architectural style of the church can be called "Siberian" baroque. A cast-iron temple fence is a bright example of decorative forging.
The flora and fauna park "Roev ruchey" was founded in Krasnoyarsk in 2000. It is situated on the bank of the powerful Yenisei near the Krasnoyarsk state nature reserve "Stolby". The history of the zoo began with a small collection of animals. Nowadays "Roev ruchey" is a home for 300 animal species. 38 species of birds and animals are included in the Red Book.
The collection of the zoo has grown up due to cooperation with other zoos of the world, citizens' support and hosts of exotic animals. As time went by, the main aim of the zoo - to gather the full collection of Siberian region animals - had changed. Now Siberian fauna representatives live in neighborhood with "foreigners". The bear loves to play with unusual toys - jerricans, skittles and tires. It is always a real performance for the visitors when Sedov searches for his toys in a swimming pool. The workers of the zoo (180 people) do their best to make living conditions of the animals close to natural conditions. There are pines and other trees specially preserved in the open cages of ungulate animals and fish in the pond which clears the bottom. The design of many cages is unusual. Cages for birds are made of round logs; there are no corners in the cage of ostriches etc.Children have possibility to communicate with wild nature in a mini zoo which represents a small village. There turkeys, quails, hamsters, goats, rabbits and pigs are kept. Children are allowed not only to stroke them, but also to feed from a special box. This mini zoo has become very popular among children. There is a big place for fish, reptiles and exotic corals situated in the left part of the zoo. Special attention is paid to sharks' place. It has become a good tradition for the guests of Krasnoyarsk to start exploring the city from the chapel of a Saint martyr Praskeva Pyatnitsa. The chapel is situated on a watch hill where you can enjoy a picturesque panorama of the city. Originally the chapel was a watch-tower built by Cossacks in XVII-XVIII centuries. It was restored several times. One of the buildings can be seen on a banknote of 10 rubles.
The chapel of Praskeva Pyatnitsa has become the symbol of Krasnoyarsk. In 1865 it was built from the stone for the first time according to the project of a local architect Yakov Alfeev. The chapel's predecessor was a wooden chapel with icons on the walls. The icons were kept in Voskresensky cathedral beginning from 1825.

World-known Krasnoyarsk Stolby is a nature reserve, which has no analogues on the whole planet. Majestic outliers of mighty rocks, that came to the Earth’s surface about 400 thousand years ago, with natural viewing platforms and ledges for sports exercises, landscapes of the evergreen taiga sea with strokes of peculiar brown colour of stone, overgrown with moss, captivating feeling of harmony and freedom that gave birth to the social phenomenon, which managed to survive through many generations, are unique and given to the humans by the Creator. From way back the Stolby territory was a trade-hunting area. This is proved by the names of the popular Laletin path and the river of the same name; in XVIII century in the mouth of the river there was a hunting estate belonging to Cossack Laletin, as well as “numeric” names of the rocks, inflows of the river and other objects.
The official history of Stolby began in 1851 with the first registered climbing to the First “Stolb” (rock) (today climbing to this rock 85 m in height is the most popular and easy with numerous ways – Katushki, Golubye, Kolokol, Voprosik, Sokolik), to the Second – in 1877, and then in 1899 the first Russian woman rock climber Anastasiya Kachalova conquered Takmak-Kyzym peak (90 m). The first stolbists’ “izba” (a log hut) Chernyshevskaya, 35 m in height, burnt down in 1906 by gendarmes, was founded by Alexander Semenovich Chernyshov, the first stolbists leader captivated by the beauty of high peaks. The number of Krasnoyarsk citizens, the admirers of the stone skyscrapers conquerors, was increasing, and due to their help in the year 1925 was founded the nature reserve Stolby, in order to protect the only natural complex in the world.
The first chief executive of the nature reserve with the total area 47 thousand hectares and surrounding protection zone of 13 thousand hectares was Alexander Leopoldovich Yavorsky, the man of tragic fortune, botanist, the author of the first scientific works about Stolby, scientist in local history, artist and the poet, who wrote a great poem about Stolby. Among the famous scientific figures of the nature reserve there are E.A. Krutovskaya – the founder of the Nature Corner (shelter) for animals, meteorologist D.G. Dulkeit, the founder of phonological observations in the nature reserves of Russia T.N. Butorina, the researcher of Daurian larch A.V. Knorre. Long-term observations at the course of natural processes give extremely accurate and unique results that give an opportunity to protect the taiga ecosystem of Krasnoyarsk region as it is and use it carefully for recreational purposes.
The taiga flora of the East Sayan Mountains is ablaze with colour: dark-green fir, pine, larch, Siberian cedar, white birch and crimson rowan, streamside bird cherry tree and alder, lower – bright cherries, among the rare plants there are yellow and showy ladies’-slippers, calypso orchid, feather grass and many others. The representatives of the taiga animal world (hazel grouse, sable, musk deer) are neighbours with steppe marmot, weasel, roe deer and others. There has also been conducted some unique research work about the life of the wood grouse, musk deer and other rare animals.
