The cultural life of the city is centered on the central square, where all city festivals, holidays and celebrations take place. On the area of 5283 m2 there is a true ensemble of buildings. In the center of the square stands a monument to Vladimir Lenin. In winter there is the main city Christmas tree and ice town shining very beautiful at night under the light of the moon.
Nearby a charming central square is located- a botanical garden in miniature. Here you can see plants specific to the Altai Republic and brought from the Far East. In one of the park alleys you can drink clear water from a spring. The highlight of the park is a fountain. According to its author, Mr Kergilov, he tried to bring to life the image of Teletskoye Lake, Waterfall Korbu. The fountain presents allegorical figures of animals of the Altai Mountains.
The building of the Altai National Drama Theatre is decorated with national elements and has an area of more than 4 thousand m2. Four-sided roof cone is stylized as an Altai ail and colors are typical for the traditional nomadic style. The theater is decorated by cedar paintings with the Scythian-Siberian ornament of Pazyryk culture. It plays in Russian and Altai languages. On the stage of this theater it was given nearly 200 performances. It employs actors and directors who have graduated from the best Russian theater universities: Russian University of Theatre Arts GITIS, Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School, Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute. The theater is a stage for performances of creative groups of the Altai and the venue for numerous events and exhibitions.
In addition, on Lenin Square there is the State Assembly of the Altai Republic El Kurultai, the Mountain Altai hotel and shopping mall Panorama.
Mount Tugaya is located almost in the center of the city, on the right bank of the Maima river, within walking distance of the Communist prospect and public transport. Together with the Komsomolskaya mount it forms the natural boundaries of the city.
The name comes from the Altai word "Uyt-Kaya" - "rock with grooves" or "Tuu-Kaya" - "mountain-rock". The height of the mountain - 641 meters asl, from the top you can see a beautiful view of the Gorno-Altaysk and the neighboring hills. The mountain is visible from almost any street of the city. It’s beautiful at any time of the year: in summer - as covered with delicate woven carpet, on which the dark green coniferous forest areas are interspersed with colorful meadow grasses; in the winter – it shines by white velvet snow.
During the city day - in September - everyone can climb the mount along the “Path of Health”. This trail is popular all year around - active citizens are happy to use this wonderful natural “exercise machine” to maintain good physical shape.
Since 1974 the alpine skiing complex is operated. The slope of the mountain is from 15º to 40º, an altitude difference of 380 m, there are 3 tracks 1250-1500 m long. Due to fairly steep and relatively flat slopes it is possible to select a track for your training level. You can use a surface lift. At the foot of the mountain there is a café, rent of ski equipment and snow tubes.
Trails of Tugaya mount are located on the south slope, so the ski season is shorter than in the Komsomolskaya mount - from the end of November to February.

Komsomolskaya mount (or briefly Komsomolka) is located near the city center, on the left bank of the Maima river, directly opposite Mount Tugaya, just across the river, a 5-minute walk from the city center. Together they form the natural boundaries of the city. The height of the mountain 428 meters above sea level. Due to its diversity of vegetation Komsomolskaya mount is declared to be a natural monument. In addition, it is a popular place for walking and recreation of citizens at any time of the year. In winter, to the delight of skiers and snowboarders there are ski trails 300 m long, equipped with a surface lift. The steepness of the slope is about 30º with the altitude difference 140 m. The trails are less complicated than Tugaya mount, but suitable for children training. The advantage of the trails is that they are located on the northern slope of the mountain, where the snow lays longer, which increases the duration of the ski season, which lasts from late November until the middle or even the end of March.
