Erzin is an administrative centre of the Erzinsky kozhuun in the Republic of Tuva. The rural settlement (sumon) is located in Ubsunur valley on the river Erzin, 216 km to the south from the capital of the Republic – Kyzyl city. The lake Dus-Khol is located 12 km to the northwest from Erzin on the left bank of the river Tes-Khem.
Ubsunur valley is a unique place. From north to south it stretches for about 160 kilometres, from west to east – 600 kilometres, but it is a whole world in miniature. There is even an “interior sea” which receives all the water from the mountains. It is the saltwater lake Ubsu-Nur which gave a name to the whole basin. During 2-3 days you can visit the majority of the existing natural areas on the Earth. In these areas desert lizard and ptarmigan, snow leopard and camel, argali and marmont-tarbagan live together. Glaciers, tundra and Alpine meadows change into mountain taiga and mixed forests which turn into forest-steppe, steppe and desert, creating a phenomenon of the exceptional beauty and diversity. It is impossible to observe these landscapes at such close quarters somewhere else on our continent. Ubsunur basin is also called a natural laboratory, where we can observe natural processes which form the biosphere of our planet in miniature.
In 2003 the park “Ubsunur basin” which is located here was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the 8th Russian territory which is included in the list of the unique gems of nature such as Niagara Falls, the Great Barrier Reef, the Hawaiian Islands, Mount Kilimanjaro...
